As long time readers know, I like to pack heat... That is, I'm strapped with a gat... In other words, I carry more hardware than Home Depot. Ok, now that all the slang is out of the way, I encourage the carrying of firearms by law abiding citizens. Nothing is more American that a .45 caliber pistol... well, maybe a pickup truck or a wet t-shirt contest.Enter my Glocks. Yes, yes... I know I said nothing is more American that a .45... well, this gun is made in Austria. That's kind of like America, except for the whole "World War/Jew killing" thing. I mean, the past is the past... right? Besides, next time you see a uniformed police officer, check out what they are carrying. I bet dollars to donuts(whatever that means) that it's a Glock.
Regardless of the country of origin, this gun design has been around for more than 25 years. It's been carried and used by me for more than 8 years. It's stood the test of time, and it's been proven in combat time and time again. Nothing says reliability like a Glock.I've recently taken to carrying my guns in a more discreet manner, that is concealed. I've always enjoyed the feeling of a big ass .45 on my hip, but when it came time to conceal that bad boy, I faced some issues. Some of the issues were overcome with proper holster/belt combinations (stay tuned for a report on that stuff). I was finally forced into looking at a smaller, lighter, more concealable weapon.
Not wanting to downgrade into a smaller caliber, I was faced with only a few options on pistols. For the sake of uniformity in training, grip, controls. I decided to go with the Glock's subcompact .45 the G-30. I want you to take the term "compact" loosely. This gun is a fair amount smaller than my full size G-21, but it's still larger than offerings from other companies (Kahr, Springfield XD, 1911 variants, etc). Two positive benefits by keeping it in the Glock family, are the interchangeability in accessories. My 13 round G-21 magazines fit into the compact version and my Crossbreed Holster accommodates both guns very well.
I was also a little concerned about accuracy with a smaller gun. You see, I've been shooting my Glock 21 for a while, making upgrades here and there, steadily making progress in accuracy. Usually what you gain in comfort and concealment, you sacrifice accuracy and firepower. While the standard magazine only holds 10 round, the 3 rounds is a worthwhile trade for the difference in size and weight. As far as accuracy goes, I'm more accurate with this smaller, stock gun than I ever was with the larger, upgraded full size pistol. I can't really explain it, but that's just the fact. All in all, I'm quite pleased with the gun. It's small, comfortable to wear, accurate, and Glock-reliable. What more can I ask for? A small pocket gun, that's what... we'll save that for another post (hint, hint).

Looking at your target there, looks like you may have too much trigger and mash it a little. One of those things I learned at Front Sight Nevada... (in my 4 day defensive handgun class). It's pretty intense... they hone you down to a 1x1 inch piece of tape from 7 meters and you're laying your shots one on top of the other. Pretty fun stuff.
Thanks for the input. Those are my first 10 rounds at 10 yards. I'll get it dialed in.
I really like the gun, even though it's WAY smaller than I'm used to. Just wait until I get my J-frame, I bet those groups are going to be gnarly at first.
I've actually had a bad experience with a glock, and have been a beretta guy since my first gun. Although, a S&W, Beretta, and a Winchester is what I got.
You may have noticed that I haven't been playing my xbox lately... :( I got the RROD back in February, and got my xbox back on March 13th (my birthday), the very next day my TV died. The repair company has been waiting ever since on Samsung to produce a part for the LED engine that failed... "Indefinitely" is what I am told. Sooo... I am in the market for a new TV. In the meantime, I haven't played games in 4 months.
Dude, I haven't been on Xbox in a long time either. Also, my dog chewed through my ethernet cable.
Hey, I've heard some bad stuff about that Front Sight place. What's the deal?
Nice. I still want to get my CCW, but I want to wait until I get a carry piece. I like this Glock. I never really liked the XD's. I've held the 4" and 5" models and they never felt right. I didn't even know they made a 3" model until just now. Literally.
Does it stay hidden well enough so that you're not "that jackass with the gun"? I already look like a piece of shit as it is, and I don't to be that redneck that takes a gun into Arby's.
Rian,
If you have a reliable gun, go ahead and get that CCW. The going time frame for permits to be issued is 3 months. My girlfriend just took her class, and she carries a Springfield XD45 in the 5" tactical, so I think whatever you have will be fine.
The gun is only one part of the equation to concealed carry. After a lot of trial and error, I finally got some good advice. You need a proper holster and belt to make a complete carry system. That belt from Walmart isn't going to cut it. Those flimsy belts let your gun sag away from your body, making it more difficult to conceal. Also, those $15 kydex holsters aren't going to work well either. Spend some good money on this stuff and you'll only have to buy it once.
To give you an example, I was using a Fobus paddle holster. It is Very comfortable, very quick to put on and take off. I would recommend it for range use or carry around the house. Yet even with a large cover garment, it still tends to bulge... unless you are going to be the douche with the cameraman's vest. From my experience with this holster, I thought I could NEVER conceal my full size Glock 21. I even tried a kydex inside the waistband holster. This concealed more easily, but the wearing the gun was uncomfortable. The slide was digging into my side and driving with it was rough. All those problems went away once I got my CrossBreed holster. I was able to carry my Glock with just a T-shirt for cover. I can't recommend this holster enough, but there are plenty of other quality holsters out there that are worth a look.
I would also recommend a belt that is specifically designed for a gun. Try 5.11, Wilderness Tactical(they are local), or Galco (local too). I use a 5.11 trainer belt, and I love it.
Also, don't forget that with a gun in the waistband, you'll need to buy pants 2 sizes bigger than you normally would.
As far as the guns go, the Glock 30 is fucking awesome. It's just as wide as the full size, but the short grip frame makes it really comfortable. I can't believe you don't like the XD. That grip feels awesome, but their XD45 compact is just a 4" service model with a shorter grip frame. Go over to shooter's world, and finger-fuck a few of the guns. If you gotta stick with the .45, you can't go wrong with this little glock. If you want to save some cash, and don't mind a 9mm, I suggest you check out the Kel-Tec PF9. Sweet little gun, and super concealable.
Keep me updated!
I heard bad stuff too... I think they are being sued because they promised a lot with the super-lifetime membership.
The courses are top notch though.
I sas you put that custom Pearce grip on the bottom of the Glock 30 magazine..correct? Did that make a big difference for you? Is it a little bit longer?
It seems that the stock 30 has my pinky finger doing a slight dangle. Before I buy one, i want to know if that baseplate piece fixed the issue.
Thanks!
@ Brandon Meves,
Hi, thanks for reading the blog!
Those mags are the 10 round mags that actually come with the pistol. The dealer told me that Glock includes a 10 round mag with the Pierce extension for their new pistols. I actually had to search for the smaller 9 round mags(flush fit mag).
I definitely like the extension because it allows you to grip the gun with all of your fingers. I would equate the feeling to that of a Glock 19 or 23 (maybe a touch wider).
Using the magazine extension makes the gun less concealable. The difference in size is rather noticeable between 9 and 10 round mags and you are only sacrificing one round for a smaller package. Learning to shoot with the smaller grip isn't so difficult. So for carrying concealed, the flush fit magazine was the right choice for me.
I still use the mag with the grip extension if I'm plinking or concealment is not concern.
Bottom line, you'll be happy with the extension.
